In August 2024, the latest research on weight changes caused by antidepressants was reported 1).
The study compared weight changes for the following eight drugs, using sertraline as the baseline:
- Citalopram（Celexa）
- Escitalopram（Lexapro）
- Fluoxetine（Prozac）
- Paroxetine（Paxil）
- Bupropion（Wellbutrin）
- Duloxetine（Cymbalta）
- Venlafaxine（Effexor）
The results of weight changes after six months of starting the medication were as follows (Figure 1):
- Citalopram：+0.12kg
- Escitalopram：+0.41kg
- Fluoxetine：-0.07kg
- Paroxetine：+0.37kg
- Bupropion：-0.22kg
- Duloxetine：+0.34kg
- Venlafaxine：+0.17kg

Patients taking escitalopram, paroxetine, and duloxetine experienced a weight gain of 0.3 to 0.4 kg more than those taking sertraline. Additionally, the likelihood of gaining at least 5% more weight from their original weight was found to be 10% to 15% higher.
Based on these results, the authors suggest that these differences could be considered in decisions between physicians and patients, especially when obesity is associated with depression.
